Muddy Waters :: Who Are We?

They say that we are supposed to vote family—vote biblical values.

I don’t know what that is anymore.

They say that police are just doing their job. Don’t run when you’re pulled over. Don’t reach into your pocket. Stop and raise your hands. Don’t resist.

I don’t know what you want anymore. You shoot anyway.

They say that everyone has a right to their ideas and opinions…

When did our opinions and rights lead to treating our neighbors like animals?

They say that enough is enough…

Who is in charge here?

Who is leading us?

Where is the good?

They say to make America Great Again…

When was it great?

It was great when we freed slaves.

It was great when we marched in the streets with Martin Luther King and demanded equal rights for black Americans.

It was great when women demanded equality and the right to vote.

It was great when we welcomed immigrants on Ellis Island…

It was never great when we slaughtered Native Americans and shipped in Africans to do our work for us.

It was never great when we built up prisons for profit and packed them full of mostly black Americans…

It was never great when we oppressed and hated…

It was never great when we pulled on white sheets and burned crosses…

And what are we now?

We’re “patriots”….

We’re proud…

We’re liars and cheaters and silent…

We do not demand that our politicians be honest and respectful…

We let criminals continue to run our government…

We let masculinity-run-amok police our streets…

We are nothing anymore…

And we certainly are not representing family or biblical values.

We are falling apart…

Or maybe we’re just finally becoming what was buried in the dark parts of our heart…

We are standing in muddy waters and pretending that everything is beautiful and okay.

Not me.

There are some that are standing with eyes wide open.

So watch out.

These waters might be muddy, but I’m going to stir them up and make a mess.

I’m a patriot that is going to start a revolution.

I will stand.

I will shout…

I will be loud…

And I will raise children that will tend people’s wounds, take care of their needs, offer them water, and feed their hunger.

I will not keep playing this game.

I will be different.

Because it isn’t about American and her rights and her freedom.

It’s about being a human.

We are all human.

Anything else is just privilege.
